The Spanish goat, also called the mountain goat or scrub goat, originated in Spain, through Mexico to the United States. Today, it is a meat and brush-clearing goat species that is widespread in the United States. In the Southeast and elsewhere, they are often known as “woods” (Florida), “scrub” or “bramble” (North Carolina, South Carolina), “hill” (Virginia), and “scrub” (west-central Pennsylvania). Until recently, these goats were raised primarily to eliminate weeds and other unwanted plant species from prairies. The Boer goat had overtaken the Spanish goats for meat by the 1980s.
